User’s Guide to the Brain

Trying to map the brain has always been cartography for fools. Most of the other parts of the body reveal their workings with little more than a glance. The heart is self-evidently a pump; the lungs are clearly bellows. But the brain, which does more than any organ, reveals least of all. The 3-lb. lump of wrinkled tissue–with no moving parts, no joints or valves–not only serves as the motherboard for all the body’s other systems but also is the seat of your mind, your thoughts, your sense that you exist at all. You have a liver; you have your limbs. You are your brain.

The struggle of the mind to fathom the brain it inhabits is the most circular kind of search–the cognitive equivalent of M.C. Escher’s lithograph of two hands drawing one another. But that has not stopped us from trying. In the 19th century, German physician Franz Joseph Gall claimed to have licked the problem with his system of phrenology, which divided the brain into dozens of personality organs to which the skull was said to conform. Learn to read those bony bumps, and you could know the mind within. The artificial–and, ultimately, racist–field of craniometry made similar claims, relying on the overall size and shape of the skull to try to determine intelligence and moral capacity.

Modern scientists have done a far better job of things, dividing the brain into multiple, discrete regions with satisfyingly technical names–hypothalamus, caudate nucleus, neocortex–and mapping particular functions to particular sites. Here lives abstract thought; here lives creativity; here is emotion; here is speech. But what about here and here and here and here–all the countless places and ways the brain continues to baffle us? Here still be dragons.

Slowly, that is changing. As 21st century science and technology open the brain to us as never before, accepted truths are becoming less true. The brain, we’re finding, is indeed a bordered organ, subdivided into zones and functions. But the lines are blurrier than we ever imagined. Lose your vision, and the lobe that processed light may repurpose itself for other senses. Suffer a stroke in the area that controls your right arm, and another area may take over at least some of the job.

Specialized neurons are being found that allow us to mirror the behavior of people around us, helping us learn such primal skills as walking and eating as well as how to become social, ethical beings. The mystery of memory is being teased apart, exposing the way we store facts and experiences in addition to the emotional flavors associated with them. Magnetic resonance imaging is probing the brain as it operates, essentially–if crudely–reading our minds, and raising all the attendant ethical questions.

Finally and most elusively, we are learning something about consciousness itself–the ghost in the neural machine that gives you the sense of being in the moment, peering out at the world from the control room behind your eyes. If we can identify that cognitive kernel, can we one day endow a machine with it? But by isolating such a thing, do we in some way annihilate it too?

Human beings have always been brash enough to ask such questions but lacked the necessary gifts to answer them. At last, we are acquiring that ability. What we can’t yet know is whether we will wisely use the remarkable things we’re slowly learning. – By JEFFREY KLUGER

** I shared this article by Jeffrey and would like to get some feedback. I have an upcoming class that will review all these items, some extensively than the rest. Until then, I await your reply. Carpe Diem

Authentic Friendship

“But if we live in the light, as God is in the light, we can share
fellowship with each other. Then the blood of Jesus, God’s Son,
cleanses us from every sin. If we say we have no sin, we are fooling
ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:7-8 NCV).

In Christian fellowship people should experience authenticity.

Authentic fellowship is not superficial, surface-level chit-chat. It’s
genuine, heart-to-heart, sometimes gut-level sharing.

It happens when people get honest about who they are and what is
happening in their lives. They share their hurts, reveal their
feelings, confess their failures, disclose their doubts, admit their
fears, acknowledge their weaknesses, and ask for help and prayer.

Authenticity is the exact opposite of what you find in many churches.
Instead of an atmosphere of honesty and humility, there is pretending,
role-playing, politicking, superficial politeness, and shallow
conversation. People wear masks, keep their guard up, and act as if
everything is rosy in their lives. These attitudes are the death of
real friendship.

It’s only as we become open about our lives that we experience
authentic fellowship. The Bible says, “If we live in the light, as God
is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other…If we say
we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves” (1 John 1:7-8 NCV).

The world thinks intimacy occurs in the dark, but God says it happens
in the light. We tend to use darkness to hide our hurts, faults,
fears, failures, and flaws. But in the light, we bring them all out
into the open and admit who we really are.

Of course, being authentic requires both courage and humility. It
means facing our fear of exposure, rejection, and being hurt again.

Why would anyone take such a risk?

Because it’s the only way to grow spiritually and be emotionally
healthy. The Bible says, “Make this your common practice: Confess your
sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live
together whole and healed” (James 5:16 MSG).

LOVE

“We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19 NIV).

The reason God wants us to love is because He is love, and He created
us to be like him—to love. The only reason we’re able to love is
because God loves us: “Love comes from God…because God is love” (1
John 4:7-8 NIV).

We were created in God’s image to do two things on earth: Learn to
love God, and learn to love other people. Life is all about love.

But love all started with God. He loved us first and that gives us the
ability to love others (1 John 4:19). The only reason you can love God
or love anybody else is because God first loved you. And He showed
that love by sending Jesus Christ to earth to die for you. He showed
that love by creating you. He showed that love by everything you have
in life; it’s all a gift of God’s love.

In order to love others and to become great lovers, we first need to
understand and feel how much God loves us. We don’t want to just talk
about love, read about love, or discuss love; we need to experience
the love of God.

We need to reach a day when we finally, fully understand how God loves
us completely and unconditionally. We need to become secure in the
truth that we cannot make God stop loving us.

Once we’re secure inside God’s unconditional love, we’ll start cutting
people a lot of slack. We won’t be as angry as we’ve been. We’ll be
more patient. We’ll be more forgiving. We’ll be more merciful. We’ll
give others grace.

But you cannot give to others what you have not received yourself, and
so my hope is that, as you learn how much God loves you, you’ll also
let Him heal your heart so that His love can flow freely through you.
It’s impossible to love others until you really feel loved yourself.

Enroute

Hey! Hope you don’t notice that this post was being worked on but did not make it on time but I guess, it’s better later than never! Cheers to a Latte’

With technology and the ubiquitous availability of information through different means, we are able to search, learn and take steps that we normally would think 3 or 4 times about it. That is part of the advantage of having access to laptops, web, wifi, search engines, etc…

This trip has been in the making for almost a decade, but of course, we have been blessed with 2 more wonderful daughters that needed both of us around. I thank my co-parent for being a wonderful mother to my 2 characters – this is my pet name for them,

Well,here it goes.

April 1, 2009  I am not really going to Paris. Gotcha! April Fool’s Day! ON a more serious not, I did have my itinerary all planned out a month ago and even asked some friends to join me for side trips after my daily workshops. Due to work and family schedules, prior commitments, etc. , they couldn’t make it. I did get a referral from a fellow coach that I thank so much for introducing me to a 1 year old start up that needed some shoving and brainstorming about how the year went.

That is what I do. Once I make contact and feel that the intake interview went well, they are provided several options and approaches due to the needs as of that time.

I don’t tell them what to do and what not, I simply guide and work with them together as a mentor and a coach – whether it is career related, life changing events or health stuff. In which case, when the level of approach is beyond my ability to help, I do work and refer them to my health affiliates.

* iTouch was loaded with over 650 songs and 23 music videos by our family friend and fellow Xaverian, Arthur De Vera. I requested it specifically for my long journey to Paris.

WOW, Art – that was amazing.

April 2, 2009

That was special. I had dinner with my co-parent, Maria and our 2 daughters at one of our favorite restaurants in small town San Mateo.

I asked that for my birthday present, I would want to not receive but to get something that our daughters were so eager to have. See, they just moved to a new 2 BR condo and one weekend, my 2 daughters and I went to IKEA and selected the bed that they wanted.

DONE! My co-parent gets the mattress and I get the bed frame and homework desks, which by the way – I already have the desks sitting in my office for almost several months.

WHEW! More room for me and new shelves for my books, of some have been sitting on several corners of the floor and piling up 15 books high!  Yay!

Yowza !

It’s still Monday. Soaked up all the information from my last lecture on Dementia. The subject matter is quite interesting and has me wishing that it is the Summer Quarter so I can take Dr. Simon Tan’s next class. NeuroScience for about 5 weeks. In the mean time, we will be keeping in touch and would let him know how my Spring class went/ taking this class about working with kids and helping them adjust to the fast paced lives that we live in now.
As a matter of fact, that is the main goal of my mentor-coach, to save 10 million lives from the life we have created. I certainly hope that you don’t have more than 1 mobile phone like me ( 3 ), not more than 1 laptop ( got it down to 1 Mac but might get a small mini laptop that is only 9″ wide_ very light and compact and great for carrying around), hopefully, you are not carrying a Satellite phone ( I don’t as of now).
Keeping and Living and Managing Life to it’s simplest form is certainly a challenge these days. I refrain from watching TV nor reading the newspaper, but that’s just me. I do glance at the sports and business section once in awhile but no longer than a minute or so – just about when my white chocolate mocha is served at my friend’s coffee shop here in San Mateo -called 3BeesCoffee.
My friend, Piaget Martelino is actually holding a 1 man exhibit for a month there/ starting May 1st/ SO – I do hope that you folks living nearby and do support the local businesses like me, show up more regularly specially on this month of May.
I thank you in advance/ Now , where was I ? Hummmm….. you read my first blog, right? I did mention that I am not a writer nor a decent blogger. I just type away.
I’ve got some folks who follow me at twitter occasionally. However, I hardly respond to posts now that using the mobile phone while driving is illegal in California. NO texting so you have to be on bluetooth.
I just make it easy for myself and just park or make my calls before I start the engine. Simple enough.
The first quarter of 2009 officially ends in an hour or so/ I will save this and continue while I sort out my 1030 emails from my 4 accounts. Trust me, you don’t want to have more than 2 email accounts but come April – I will be down to 2.
mickey@ohmy-coach.com
michuakay@gmail.com
michuakay@yahoo.com ( hummm<< will keep as a contact resource only “” like my blackberry ). I just carry a simple slim Sanyo and a small web phone Motorola for my use.
I’ll catch you again sometime later on. You all have a Blessed 2nd Quarter of 2009! Carpe Diem!

WORLD WATER DAY!

- thanks for being aware. I am sure that somehow, some way, some where – we were able to make an impact just by thinking of our usage or any donations to your favorite water cause.
charity:water I support it. Scott has done wonders and continues to do so. I still remember the $16 US dollar martini that is actually the equivalent of what? 20 units of 5 gallon container of H2O.
Much work has to be done, lots of funds required to keep the momentum going. There is no rest for someone who lays awake, knowing that there is no clean water available nor does he know when it will be available.
For a second, place yourself in that position. Pretty damn scary! Well, let’s get to work. Do something or better yet, sacrifice a few cups of coffee and make a donation.

WATER

Beginning: working with a friend in Manila who referred me to this wonderful and challenging project. Mission: Clean the Pasig River of Gina Lopez
HOW: networking and joint effort from all sectors. will find out more from Manila group
WHY: why NOT?
WHEN: any time soon
Where: Pasig River

I am here trying to come up with the best approach in combining all these NGO and NPO’s in working together. Please don’t get me wrong, they do now, but how can we do it more efficiently and make it a free flow project with help coming from anyone, anytime and anywhere?
Guess: ubiquitous connectivity through emails, twitter, social networking sites, text messages, banners, television-print-and radio advertisements PLUS many more ways that are available.

IDEAS: KINDLY email them to me so I can compile and bring out the top 5 recommendations that would make it possible for all to achieve the goal of cleaning up our dear Pasig River.
